Who knew there would be such a thing? But when you realise that there are awareness days and weeks for all sorts of things, including the International Talk Like a Pirate Day on 19th September, it doesn’t seem all that strange to have National Payroll Week!
National Payroll Week was established in the UK by the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals in 1998 to celebrate the payroll profession and to give it the recognition it deserves. The week is designed to demonstrate the impact the payroll industry has in the UK through the collection of income tax and National Insurance; especially when you consider the £345billion paid to the Government through income tax and national insurance contributions.
A few payroll facts:
- The very first payroll has been traced back to 7000 BC – although perhaps not quite payroll as we know it!
- The first employee time clock was built by Willard Legrand Bundy and was patented in 1891. At the time, it was dubbed the “Workman’s Time Recorder”
- According to ancient “paystubs,” employees in Egypt and Mesopotamia used to be paid in beer and other commodities
- In 1966, The Beatles released the song ‘Taxman’ to protest against the 95% supertax they were paying
